IN CHARACTER
Name: John Murphy
Canon: The 100
Canon Point: Post s3
Age: 17
History: The 100 + John Murphy
Personality:
Of the series, John Murphy is perhaps the most fluid character presented, and makes one of the longest journeys in character growth from season 1 to the end of season 3, where he’d be coming into game from. His motivations, when the delinquents first step onto Earth, are largely influenced by a deep buildup of resentment, loss, injustice and a deeper core of self-loathing, fueling a sense of guilt that attributes all of the former to his simple existence, thanks to a dying mother saying “you killed your father”. The main road you see Murphy take is from that volatile, unrelenting rage and want for vengeance, and need to find some kind of personal justice, to trying to find what things from life he actually needs to sustain himself on. At first, that core is just simple survival. Murphy comes to the idea that vengeance may be satisfying, but ultimately, bad for his continued existence for all the enemies it makes and all the no escape situations it puts him in. From there, he becomes solitarily interested in his own survival and well-being, but on a deeper level, he’s still searching for something to fulfill. The quest taken out into the Dead Zone with Jaha takes him several places that should have killed him, but it’s in the interest of finding somewhere he can be acceptance, and welcomed, having felt like an outsider for as long as he can remember. Rather than the City of Light, Murphy finds this acceptance in Emori, and from there, it’s a path of making the decisions on what kind of survival he wants to have - one that’s guaranteed, but isolated, or one that’s at risk, but with the companionship of someone to share it with. What is the former worth to him without the latter?
One of the key aspects that Murphy carries through his stories is a strong ability to adapt. In the way the same way that he’s so fluid, Murphy’s quick to find his place in a situation, learn from it, and begin to make adjustments to himself to better that spot. Whether that comes in physical skill, or a certain mindset, or presenting himself a particular way, Murphy steps into the roll and starts to work on it immediately after he can mentally identify it.
Murphy isn’t a character that fits into Good or Bad particularly well, more in shades of grey, especially in terms of his moral compass. Furthermore, he finds himself regularly trying to make choices between what choices and actions make sense, and what he’ll be able to leave with doing afterwards. A lot of Murphy’s conflicts come out to logic versus emotions, especially when he starts to let his want for resentment, grudges and wrath go. There’s still strict tiers of priority - Murphy is first and foremost loyal to himself, and others fall into line after that.
After suffering so much tragedy and so much abuse from the world, Murphy’s view of it has become deeply cynical. Nothing is free, as far as his understanding goes, including both resources and sentiments. He makes risk assessments at every choice, with every connection he makes. Someone disappoints him, and he tells them “you’re just like everyone else”, or someone mentions parting ways, and he states “no one comes back, not here”. He’s deeply distrusting, and not for bad reason, considering how often he’s been betrayed or left behind or kicked out. Thus, it’s left some abandonment issues in him as well, from losing his father, to his mother spiralling into drinking, to assumed friends cutting ties with him when it becomes convenient.
Murphy is freaking rude. His dialogue, even with people he likes or even loves, tends towards frank, blunt, even cruel at times. He has a sharp tongue, and a short temper, sometimes very petty, and isn’t above getting hurtfully malicious, or sarcastically mocking. It should be noted, as well, that while Murphy clearly had a poor education, the boy is innately intelligent, with a knack for pragmatism, and a skill in manipulation and observation. The ground has taught Murphy that whatever strength or skill or weapon he might have with him will never be enough to keep himself safe, so he’s started to lean more and more on making observations, developing clever tactics, and using the people around him to ensure is continued safety, as he does with Ontari, making himself something necessary to her, and thus, protecting himself from everyone else within Polis that would want his head, Ontari herself included.
When feeling connected to a person on a level he can trust, though, Murphy comes to be deeply dedicated, and the part of his personality that have the capability of being so tenacious, resilient and unrelenting comes to aid with that. If a person has left Murphy behind, he, by principle, leaves them behind as well, but if they’re one of the few to put themselves at risk to come back for him, he’ll pay it back with a fierce loyalty.
At the core, Murphy is lonely. He’s alone in the world, having lost his father, having been rejected by his mother, been ostracized by his friends, and treated as a criminal by his people, Murphy feels he has no place in the world most of the time. He’s expressed that he’s afraid of dying alone, and he continually seeks out a means to be accepted despite better judgment. Even with how much he resents Clarke and friends, he’s been seen to stick with them above being completely on his own, until he reaches a point that it’s suffering abuse. In truth, there’s a string so self-loathing that goes through Murphy, partly convinced that he’s deserved all the hate and pain that he gets. Murphy’s gone through several different patterns of abuse, by family, by friends, by enemies, and it’s rooted something in him that tries to make sense of it. He labels himself ‘the bad guy’, and believes that things like hate, pain and envy are the building blocks of who he is. “You get rid of them and there’s nothing left”. It’s when people start to try to believe in Murphy, past those more apparent attributes twisted up on the surface, that he starts to really become attached to people.
Setting: Having just had the whole ALIE and City of Light issue going down, Murphy will at first flip his shit, thinking the only way he could be seeing something like this is if he'd been sucked into it somehow. He's a very logical, realistic person, so the multiverse story will be a hard sell for him. He'll likely run off into the city at first, needing to get distance and a means to figure all of this out on his own, without someone trying to tell him what it is and expect him to take it as truth. After he's had time to do that, he'll go back to get his TAB and housing and all of that, and start focusing on survival again. Going home isn't much of a concern for Murphy, considering home sucks, so if he has Emori with him, that's all he'll really care about. If not, he'll be more focused on trying to get back, as she's the main thing he currently wants in his life.
Abilities/Skills: Gurl, he can't do shit. Other than survive through everything like a cockroach, but that's just luck or karma or something idk.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ adaptable
+ intelligent
+ dedicated/tenacious
+ resilient
+ self-sufficient
- he's a sarcastic douche
- emotionally volatile
- lonely
- self loathing/guilt
- pessimistic
Items: The clothes on his back, Ontari's blood on his hand
